Welcome to the RatDebat website!

Ratdebat is a coöperation of Flemish and Dutch breeders of fancy rats, and has been founded on September 5th, 2005. It raised from the ashes of a similar initiative called the VVRF.

The main goal of RatDebat is to discuss breeding practices with a small group of similar minded breeders, and to help each other make the right choices by outing well-funded criticism about each others plans.

The members of RatDebat wish to breed fancy rats that make great pets; this includes a good health, life expectancy and temperament. Our ideal is to breed rats that stay healthy and fit during their long life, and make good compagnons for other rats and for humans. We also pay attention to the exterior of the rats; we aim for rats with a nice *uitstraling* and good type.  

We try to achieve that by doing our best to estimate what to expect from a certain combination of parents, based on the traits in the line or family and on our joined experience and knowledge. That is how we aim for improvement of each litter, compared to the former generations. We also pay a lot of attention to the rearing of the kittens, in order to get them the best start with the right food, the best socialisation and other possible aspects of mental and physical development.

Our own rats are pets first; their wellbeing is always more important to us than our breeding plans.
